How do you know if you’re insulin resistant? The following flags will give you some direction:
- Skin Tags
- Acanthosis Nigricans
- Triglyceride/HDL Ratio greater than 3.0
- Elevated small dense LDL particle number > 500
- Fasting Insulin Level >5 mg/dl
- Fasting Blood Sugar >100
- Post-Prandial Blood Sugar >140 (2 hours after a meal)
- Waist Circumference > 40 inches in men; >35 inches in women
- Family History of Diabetes
- Coronary Artery Disease – now direct evidence that coronary artery disease is due to hyperinsuliemia.

Great post Dr. Nelly! I don’t have any of these conditions but my HbA1C was 5.5 nov 2015 (5.3 2014) glucose 66 and LP-IR score of <25 you got derailed and lost your thought about the ideal LP-IR score. Am I getting insulin resistance? Any thoughts? All other lab results were fine.
Thank you,
LP-IR should be < 25. You are correct. Great numbers. However HbA1c, fasting glucose, and LP-IR won't change until you in the third stage of insulin resistance. The real key to identification of insulin resistance is a 2 or three hour glucose tolerance test with insulin levels. See my article on the use of GGT here for the numbers: http://docmuscles.com/2015/11/23/diabetes-mellitus-really-the-fourth-stage-of-insulin-resistance/
Keep up the great work.

Are all of these results part of the LAB work I found on your site?
Triglyceride/HDL Ratio greater than 3.0
Elevated small dense LDL particle number > 500
Fasting Insulin Level >5 mg/dl
Fasting Blood Sugar >100
Post-Prandial Blood Sugar >140 (2 hours after a meal)
Christina,
Yes, these can be found through the recommended lab testing.
